Travel Stage: After San Diego
Date Range: March 13 – April 2, 2017
Summary: Oceanside surfing, La Jolla seals, Ocean Beach with Migratory Life, Temecula wine tasting, flying drones with Marc and Julie Bennett of RV Love. There is SO much to do in Southern California! Looking back, it’s hard to believe we did it all – a common theme and feeling we’ve had while living full-time in our RV.
Since we had hit our southern terminus in San Diego (we would like to go to Mexico someday, but it wasn’t in the plan this time), it was time to start making our slow way north again…and have some more fun adventures!
We left our campground outside of San Diego to move up the coastline. We found and awesome place to stay in Oceanside, CA – it was literally called “Paradise by the Sea!” Check out our campground review here.
We were a 5-minute walk from the beach, and a short bike ride to the Oceanside pier where we could watch the plethora of surfers and beach-goers enjoying the sunny days.
One of those sunny days Tom finally persuaded me to wetsuit-up and go swimming in the Pacific Ocean with him. Although it was sunny and warm, that Pacific Ocean is COLD! But we had a blast playing in the waves.
When/If you go, there is a beach that is closed off to the public so people can’t get down to the seals. Some seals go around to another beach, and while there are signs saying to leave them alone you can go right up to them. BE CAREFUL if you approach! I watched several people almost step on seals because they look like rocks or because they were backing up trying to take a picture. Please respect the wildlife! Take a picture or two, but remember not to intrude.
Ocean Beach – “Ob”
We ventured down to the hot beach town of Ocean Beach to meet up with some new friends, Steffanie and Mike of Migratory Life. We grabbed some grub and drinks and watched the sun set through the palm trees over the pier. Be sure to check out their website and their Instagram to follow their adventure.
The next stop was Temecula, CA, an area that is growing rapidly in its reputation of wineries and breweries. We stayed at a beautiful Harvest Host winery there! We were treated to magnificent sunsets, our first experience of jasmine in bloom (smells amazing!), and an early morning show of hot-air balloons over the vineyards right behind us!
|We also met up with some fellow RVers you may have heard of before: Marc and Julie Bennett of RVLove! We wine tasted together at the vineyard, caught up with them since we last saw them at Quartzsite, and then we got down to business: Back in San Diego we decided to upgrade our current drone system from the DJI Phantom to the DJI Mavic, and Marc and Julie wanted to purchase our Phantom.|
Mortons on the Move and RVLove! (Tom, Marc, Julie, Caitlin) Tom gave Marc some “flying lessons” to make sure he was comfortable with the drone and Marc was a super fast learner! Be sure to check out their YouTube Channel and keep an eye out for their drone footage!
If you haven’t already, you should consider joining Harvest Hosts! You’ll find unique and fun places to stay like this one (not all of them put you to work :D). Get 10% off your sign up using the promo code in the following link: Harvest Hosts.
